Round Ligament Pain in Pregnancy: Why It Happens and What Helps

If you're pregnant and feeling sharp, pulling sensations low in your belly or groin, especially when you move suddenly, stand up, or roll over in bed, there's a good chance you're experiencing round ligament pain. It's common, it's usually nothing to be alarmed about, and importantly, it's something you can often get relief from.
Here's the quick answer: round ligament pain happens because the ligaments supporting your growing uterus are stretching and working harder as your pregnancy progresses. While it's a normal part of pregnancy, that doesn't mean you have to just endure the pain. There are real ways to find relief.
What the Round Ligaments Are
The round ligaments are two cord-like bands that connect the front of your uterus to your groin area. Their job is to support the uterus and hold it in position.
As your baby grows, your uterus expands significantly, and these ligaments have to stretch and bear more load. When they stretch quickly, like during a sudden movement, they can spasm or pull, which produces that sharp, fleeting pain. It's similar to how a muscle might twinge when stretched suddenly.
Why It Tends to Show Up in the Second Trimester
Round ligament pain is most common in the second trimester, when your uterus is growing rapidly. By this stage, the ligaments are under more tension than before, so movements that didn't bother you earlier can suddenly trigger a pull. The pain is usually brief, sharp, and on one or both sides of your lower belly.
What Actually Helps
The good news is that several things can ease round ligament pain.
Moving more slowly and deliberately helps a lot, especially when changing positions, standing up, or getting out of bed. Sudden movements are the most common trigger, so easing into them reduces the strain. Gentle stretching and supported rest can relieve tension. Many women also find relief from a maternity support band, which helps carry some of the load. And supporting your pelvic balance through prenatal chiropractic care can make a meaningful difference.
How Chiropractic Care Fits In
This is where prenatal chiropractic care becomes relevant. Round ligament pain is closely tied to how your pelvis is balanced and how evenly tension is distributed across the muscles and ligaments that support your uterus.
When your pelvis is out of balance, certain ligaments end up under more strain than others, which can make round ligament pain worse. The Webster Technique, a specific prenatal chiropractic method, focuses on restoring pelvic balance and reducing that uneven tension. When the pelvis is balanced and the supporting structures aren't overworked, many women find their round ligament discomfort eases.
At Roots Chiropractic, both Dr. Lauren Wood and Dr. Michael Wood are Webster certified, with dedicated training in prenatal care. Your care is specific and adapted to your stage of pregnancy.
When to Check With Your Provider
Round ligament pain is typically brief and movement-related. If you experience pain that's severe, constant, accompanied by fever, bleeding, or regular contractions, or anything that feels different or concerning, contact your OB or midwife promptly. It's always okay to get reassurance, and these symptoms are worth ruling out.
