The Webster Technique, Explained: What It Is and What It Isn't

If you've been looking into chiropractic care during pregnancy, you've almost certainly come across the Webster Technique. It comes up a lot, and there's also a fair amount of confusion and overstatement about what it does. Here's a clear, honest explanation.
The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic method developed for pregnancy. It focuses on assessing and improving the balance and alignment of the pelvis, with the goal of reducing tension and supporting comfort as your body changes. That's the core of it.
Where It Came From
The technique was developed in the 1980s by Dr. Larry Webster, who founded the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA). The story behind it is a personal one: he was present at his daughter's long and difficult birth, and it drove him to find a more specific way to support women's pelvic balance through pregnancy and labor. Today it's taught through a dedicated ICPA certification program, and it's become one of the most recognized approaches in prenatal chiropractic care.
What It Actually Does
During pregnancy, your pelvis goes through a lot. Hormonal changes loosen your ligaments, your posture shifts, and tension can build unevenly around the pelvis and the muscles and ligaments that support it. That imbalance is often behind common pregnancy complaints like round ligament pain and low back discomfort.
The Webster Technique uses specific adjustments to the sacrum and pelvis to reduce that tension and restore better balance. When the pelvis is balanced and moving well, two things tend to follow: you're more comfortable, and your body has the space it needs to function as your baby grows.
It's worth emphasizing that these adjustments are specific and modified to keep your spine in a neutral position. There's no aggressive twisting, and everything is adapted to your stage of pregnancy with your comfort as the priority.
What It Is NOT
Here's where the confusion usually comes in. You may have heard that the Webster Technique "turns" or "flips" breech babies. That's not accurate, and we'd rather be straight with you than repeat a myth.
The Webster Technique does not turn babies. What it does is reduce tension and improve pelvic balance, which can help create a more supportive environment for your baby to move and settle into an optimal position on their own. The technique supports your body. It doesn't force an outcome.
That distinction matters, because it keeps the focus where it belongs: on helping your body work well, not on promising results no one can guarantee.
This isn't just our opinion, either. The ICPA, the organization Dr. Webster founded and which certifies chiropractors in the technique, has itself moved away from "breech turning" language and published clarification urging chiropractors to stop using it. We think that's worth knowing when you're evaluating what you read about this technique elsewhere.
How to Know Your Provider Is Qualified
Because the Webster Technique requires specific training, you'll want to make sure your chiropractor is actually Webster certified. It's a fair question to ask any provider directly.
At Roots Chiropractic, both Dr. Lauren Wood and Dr. Michael Wood are Webster certified, with dedicated training in prenatal chiropractic care. That training is what allows them to apply the technique safely and effectively throughout your pregnancy.
When to Start
Many women begin care in their second trimester, but it's never really too early or too late to start. Whether you're early in your pregnancy or approaching your due date, supporting pelvic balance can help you stay more comfortable and prepared.
