Is Chiropractic Care Safe During Pregnancy?

If you're pregnant and dealing with back pain, hip discomfort, or that constant achiness that comes with a changing body, you've probably wondered whether chiropractic care could help, and whether it's safe to do while you're expecting. It's one of the most common questions we hear from moms-to-be.
Here's the straight answer: yes, chiropractic care is widely considered safe during pregnancy when performed by a chiropractor trained in prenatal care. Many expecting mothers find it's one of the most helpful things they do for their comfort throughout pregnancy.
Why Pregnancy Creates So Much Physical Stress
Pregnancy changes your body quickly and significantly. Your center of gravity shifts, your posture changes, and a hormone called relaxin loosens your ligaments to prepare for birth. All of this puts new stress on your spine and pelvis.
That's why so many women experience low back pain, hip pain, round ligament discomfort, and general tension as pregnancy progresses. These aches are common, but common doesn't mean you simply have to suffer through them.
How Prenatal Chiropractic Care Works
Chiropractic care during pregnancy focuses on keeping your pelvis and spine balanced and moving well as your body adapts. Adjustments are tailored to each stage of pregnancy. Tables and techniques are adjusted to accommodate your growing belly comfortably and safely.
The goal is to reduce tension, support proper alignment, and help your body function as well as it can during a time of major change.
What Is the Webster Technique?
You may have heard of the Webster Technique. It's a specific chiropractic approach designed for pregnancy that focuses on balancing the pelvis and reducing tension in the surrounding muscles and ligaments. Both Dr. Lauren and Dr. Michael are Webster certified, which means they've completed additional training in this prenatal-specific method.
One important clarification, since there's a lot of confusion about it: the Webster Technique does not "turn" breech babies. What it does is help balance the pelvis and reduce tension, which can create more room for the baby to move and settle into an optimal position on their own. The focus is on supporting your body, not forcing an outcome.
Is It Safe? What to Know
Chiropractic care is considered safe during a healthy pregnancy, and prenatal chiropractic uses techniques with no forceful twisting. That said, every pregnancy is different. If you have a high-risk pregnancy or specific complications, it's always worth checking with your OB or midwife, and a good prenatal chiropractor will want to understand your full picture before beginning care.
At Roots Chiropractic, we start with a thorough consultation and use INSiGHT nervous system scans to understand how your body is handling the demands of pregnancy before we begin. From there we build care around your specific needs and stage.
When Should You Start?
You can begin prenatal chiropractic care at any point in pregnancy. Many women start in the first or second trimester to stay ahead of discomfort, but it's never too early or too late to benefit.
If you're in East Mesa or the Gilbert area and want support through your pregnancy, we'd love to help you feel more comfortable and prepared.
